🧐When you are a dutyholder for your site, you are responsible to ensure that complete electrical compliance is in effect across the workplace. This includes providing “safe systems at work, safe places of work, safe people at work” according to Sections 2 & 37 of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Along with this, you are also responsible to ensure that all on-site documentation complies with the EaWR 1989 which states:
“As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems, shall at all times be of such construction, so as not to give rise to danger.” – Reg 4 (1) & (2) of EaWR 1989.
So with this in consideration, how often should your site undergo routine inspection and testing?
🟣The IET recommend that any Hospital, Commercial or Education site is to undergo inspection and testing every 5 years, and any Industrial site every 3 years. This allows programmed work to include either 100%, 33% or 20% testing taking place each year, depending on your preference as the dutyholder.
🧑🔧It is imperative that there is confidence throughout the workplace of compliance, and evidence being provided in case of an emergency or unplanned visit from the HSE. As dutyholder, you are responsible for ensuring full control of your site’s electrical infrastructure and complete compliance with systems and documentation.
Are you keeping up with your inspection and testing programme?
