Richard started training with Wheaters, Chartered Accountants, in 1988, a three partner practice in Rotherham. He gained essential experience, working with a wide range of small and medium sized companies in all aspects of accounting. He qualified in May 1997, before becoming assistant to the partners.

Richard joined the Lowe Group (later to become NECTA) in July 2000 as Company Accountant. Given Richard’s obvious talent, he was appointed Finance Director in November 2000 and became a major shareholder in 2003.

Richard spent the next 8 years helping to build the company and take it from £2 million to £20 million turnover. During this period, Richard developed the financial systems and processes consistent with external client demand, utilising IT software such as Sage and Estimation. Richard played both a key and influential role in the due diligence process satisfying the vigorous demands of Deloittes during acquisition.

Richard left Connaught in March 2010 and decided once again to join forces with his former colleagues at Guardian Electrical Compliance Ltd in October 2010.
