Inspection and testing in the food and drink sector – during their normal operations

For manufacturers in the food and drink sector, forming a sustainable relationship with a high-quality supplier of electrical compliance services is important for a number of reasons:

  • First and foremost, it ensures you fulfil your legal obligations
  • It also guarantees all electrical records can be consolidated by your Dutyholder – vital, should there ever be a breach of the Electricity at Work Regulations (EaWR) 1989.

Numerous companies like Haribo, Greencore, PepsiCo and Nestle in the food and drink sector are now using TraQit for free

Specific considerations for electrical compliance in the food and drink sector

THERMOGRAPHIC SURVEYS

The objective of a thermographic survey is to identify abnormally high temperatures within electrical distribution systems. Any high temperatures within electrical components are often indicative of imminent or possible problems. It is important that early identification of these potential faults is identified at an early stage in order that remedial action can be undertaken.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) recognises the benefits of performing thermographic surveys of electrical installations as a supplement to a visual inspection and periodic test.

BLOWLINE CONTINUITY TESTING

The transference of any ‘particle’ around your plant through blowlines will introduce a ‘static electrical charge’. The only way to control this charge is effective earthing of the whole system. Guardian Electrical will test each joint and provide a comprehensive report on each of your blowlines along with advice on how to remedy any problems.

LIGHTNING PROTECTION TESTING

Once a lightning protection system is installed, it must be professionally tested at least once a year to ensure it is capable of conducting a potential lightning strike to a safe earthing point. This ensures compliance with the Electricity at Work Act 1989, BS6651 and BS EN 62305.

CONTROL PANEL RISK ASSESSMENTS

It is a legal requirement under Reg 14 of EaWR 1989 and HSE HSG85 to ensure it is safe to work on or near live conductors. This serves to show how, with careful consideration and the implementation of appropriate control measures, risk can be reduced to an acceptable level where work on or near live conductors is considered acceptable..

EMERGENCY LIGHTING PERIODIC INSPECTION & TEST TO BS 5266-1:2016

Employers have a general duty under (Section 2) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of their employees at work. People in control of non-domestic premises have a duty under (section 4) of the act to people who are not their employees but use their premises. The regulations expand on these duties and are intended to protect the health and safety of everyone in the workplace.

PORTABLE APPLIANCE TESTING

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) provides an instant visual confirmation of portable appliances, via correct and up to date labelling, this ensures that maintenance has been carried out and the equipment in question has been declared safe to use.

Guardian ensure that all inspectors visiting food and drink sites have undergone and obtained their SPA Food & Drink qualification as requested from the industry and the HSE.
