Whilst recently out on-site, one of our observatory inspectors came across thermal damage whilst conducting testing in a control panel for a large industrial 63 AMP Three Phase Oven. The Yellow/L2 phase supply conductor to this panel, was originally hidden behind a clear, Perspex protective casing, which was going into the supply side of the main rotary isolator.
Resultantly, this hid most of the damage, only showing a slight bit of charring on the cable. Fortunately, due to the thorough work of Aaron Johnson, on closer inspection once the Perspex cover was removed, the cable itself was not terminated correctly into the terminal. As a result of this, over time this caused heat build-up and potential arcing within the terminal, which ultimately led to the thermal damage and a C1 observation to be identified.
This was immediately brought to the client’s attention and was rectified including a further test, which left them even happier with the panel.
