🎓Technical Tuesday – Why you need to comply with Regulation 12 of EaWR.
One of the key aspects of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EaWR) is the obligation to provide suitable means of cutting off and isolating electrical equipment in case of danger. This is an ABSOLUTE regulation, meaning that there is no excuse for not following it. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will not tolerate any breaches of this regulation. In order to comply with this regulation, you need to have Electrical System Schematic Drawings that show how your electrical equipment is connected and labelled.
📒 Regulation 12 of EaWR states:
“(1) Subject to paragraph (3), where necessary to prevent danger, suitable means (including, where appropriate, methods of identifying circuits) shall be available for –
(a) cutting off the supply of electrical energy to any electrical equipment.
and
(b) the isolation of any electrical equipment.”
Have a think to yourself:
🤔 Do you have a clear and comprehensive Inspection Schematic Drawing and Labelling system for your site(s)?
🧠 In an emergency, could you access your Network Drawings quickly and easily to isolate the affected equipment?
🤔 Are your Network Drawings updated and accurate, reflecting any recent changes or modifications?
🧠 Are your labels legible and visible to anyone who needs to access them?
